There’s a saying that has always stuck with me: Start as you mean to go on. At the beginning of a new year, it feels even more symbolic as many of us set out our goals and intentions for the next 12 months. For me, I’m planning to have the chicest year yet, but that doesn’t come with a complete wardrobe overhaul. Instead, I’m focusing on a few smart additions that will complement the pieces I already have, and bring a newness to my most relied upon looks. Naturally, I turned to three brands whose designs always balance simplicity, modernity and trends in perfect harmony, and that’s Zara, Reformation and COS.

As a trio, these brands tick off every part of a great wardrobe. Classic tailoring is a cornerstone of modern wardrobes, and these brands know how to infuse elegance in the finer details of pleating and cut. Knitwear remains a focal point for capsule wardrobe building, and as we tend to only take a few months break from this particular category each year, I’m looking to support my cold-weather outfits with smart knit choices with luxurious infusions of cashmere, wool and merino right now.
