For my last couple of trips to the nail salon, however, I’ve been flipping through the nail color display charts my technicians have given me and selecting toasty brown shades from my favorite polish brands. They’re warm, neutral, and somehow go with everything—like the nail version of your favorite coffee or leather bag,” she says. Mazur also highlights that brown nails are also incredibly easy to wear, as they never look overly bold or plain. Brown nails work well for any occasion and look particularly stunning when dressed up with gold jewelry. “That’s why people love them. Brown nails are timeless, cozy, and quietly confident—just like good coffee and great style,” adds Mazur.
When it comes to the brown manicures that have caught her eye recently, Mazur has been especially drawn to manicures created with taupe brown. “It’s one of those shades that always look clean and elegant without trying too hard. It has a soft, neutral tone that goes with everything. It’s simple but never boring, just timeless and chic,” she says. Her all-time favorite brown nail looks, however, use ganache brown: a deep, rich, chocolate shade. “There’s something about it that instantly makes nails look more refined, like the color was made for fall and winter light,” she says. “It has that glossy, smooth finish that catches the eye but still keeps things classy.”
What’s the Best Brown Polish for Me?
Since beginning my career as a beauty editor, I’ve come across hundreds of brown nail polishes that look stunning against my skin that I once thought would be far from complementary. Hours spent swatching brown polish shades at the nail salon were definitely helpful, but so was understanding how the undertone of your skin can change how a nail polish looks once it’s out of the bottle and on the nails. For skin with cool undertones, Mazur recommends opting for brown nail polish shades with a tasteful touch of mauve, taupe, or espresso in them. “Those cooler tones bring out the natural contrast and look match your skin color,” she explains. If your skin is neutral, however, consider trying anything from creamy beige-browns to deep truffle shades. For individuals with warm skin tones, try warm brown polish shades with caramel, amber, or milk chocolate shades. “They’ll make your skin glow and feel super harmonious,” says Mazur.

This mocha brown shade is the ideal option for anyone who prefers to keep things light and creamy. To create this nail look, London- and Barcelona-based nail artist Mateja Novakovic selected a polish with an ultra-glossy finish.
